A few reminders on what you need to be working on through Second Quarter :

If you are planning to apply to a four year college, you should be completing your SAT or ACT testing and working on your college applications. Schedule a meeting with your counselor to update her on this. Only a few of you have been working on your college applications and we know there are more of you that should be doing this. Watch your deadlines. There are some colleges with deadlines in November so be careful. We recommend to complete all of your other applications by December. Use your Senior Packet on College and Career Planning as a resource, through this process.
If you are planning to apply to a two year, community or junior college, you should be checking on the information you need to complete your application. Most two year colleges start accepting their applications during the Second Semester. If you are planning to apply to Kauai Community College or any ot the other UH Community Colleges, check with your counselor about the COMPASS placement test so that you can start planning to get this done for yourself before the Second Semester.
PTP - There are still quite a lot of you seniors who have not completed your PTP. Please check with Aunty Joan in the Counseling Office during recess or lunch to see if your name is still on this Most Wanted List. If your name is still on it, she will give you further information. Let us work on getting this list down to zero names by the end of this Semester. Would be nice to have all of our Seniors with their PTP credit by then.
For the Seniors on our Odysseyware Credit Recovery Program, you need to be working on getting those credits completed as soon as possible. Schedule your meetings with your counselor to check on your progress and to see how much more you need to do to earn your credit. You need to be signing in to the computer lab each week and completing your tests at that time. This is important, so please work on it.
Continue to work on your attendance and grades. All of your grades are important: 1) towards earning your credits for graduation, and 2) for those of you planning to attend college it will help with your application and when you start applying to scholarships too. 2/2
Seniors and Juniors:
The Hawaii College and Career Fair has been scheduled for Monday, November 15 at the Kauai Beach Resort from 9:00 am - 11:00 am and 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm. It is free to attend.
Kapaa High School's time to attend the Fair is from 9:00 am - 9:45 am. Any Senior or Junior interested in attending this event can start signing up in the Counselor's Office on Tuesday, October 26 during recess, lunch time and after school only. The only way to attend this day time session, is to sign up. You need to pickup and return your signed consent forms, along with $3.20 for the bus. We can take only two busses, so It is on a first come, first served basis. The bus will leave the school by 8:30 am and return by 10:20 am. All school rules will apply. If you cannot attend the day time session, there is always the evening one to attend. If you are interested in what colleges will be there, see Aunty Joan in the Counseling Office for the list. 2/2

Help Prepare your 10th grader for upcoming HSA testing

As featured in the Honolulu Star Advertiser, Kapaa High Sophomores will start taking the high-stakes tests next week online here on campus. Here are a few basic ways Parents and Guardians can help support their teens success and  overall progress  in the days leading up to and during the testing:
  • Encourage your teen to check out the sample test, tutorial and other materials available online. www.alohahsa.org. You can review this information with your teen.
  • Be aware when the tests will be taking place.
  • Ensure your child is rested and well fed and hydrated before and during the testing.
  • Keep it positive: offer supportive positive words to your teen, avoid drama or creating added stress

We encourage Parents and Guardians of our sophomores to support the progress and efforts here at Kapaa High by checking out the sample test, tutorial and other materials available online. www.alohahsa.org

"When some 93,000 public school students start taking high-stakes state tests..." "... they will have to score higher than last year to be considered proficient in math and reading. The new standards reflect initiatives to increase classroom rigor and achievement..."

SAT Test Taking Strategies

Fall SAT Testing is upon us. Here are some SAT test taking strategies from College Connections:

  • Work at an even, steady pace, but keep moving.
  • Most of the questions in each section range from easy to hard.
  • Keep track of time during the test.
  • Know which questions are best for you.
  • Skip questions that you can't answer without spending a long time figuring it out.
  • Answer the easy questions first.
  • Remember that all questions are worth the same point value.
  • Eliminate your choices.
  • Make an educated guess.
  • Watch the time you spend on any one question.
  • Use your test booklet as scratch paper, and mark questions to back to.
  • Check your answer sheet regularly to make sure you're answering the right question.
  • Keep you answer sheet neat.
  • Think positively.
  • Stay focused.
  • Concentrate on your own progress.
  • Keep the test in perspective.
  • Remember...you're in control.
